RaccoonsRaccoons in the home can cause great damage

Raccoons are true omnivores, eating everything that looks good. They are nature’s finest opportunists, taking advantage of their incredible dextral skills to secure safe housing and excelling in expert foraging abilities. Although raccoons can be found living almost anywhere in New England, they are skilled climbers and prefer to nest in attics and chimneys, which provide cover and warmth. They are remarkably strong animals and are quite capable of pulling apart plastic soffits, shingles, and rake boards in order to gain entry into attic areas.

Once inside the attic, raccoons can do a considerable amount of damage to the insulation and ceiling board. A typical family of raccoons consists of 5 to 9 members, which collectively can generate a great deal of fecal matter within the attic. Not only is this condition an enormous health problem for the occupants of the home, but the smell can be almost unbearable. Before attempting repair to the areas where the animals are entering, the raccoons must be humanely live trapped and removed from the site.

SkunksSkunks

Skunks can be a common problem for the homeowner. Most often the homeowner discovers a family of skunks either living under their porch/deck or an outbuilding, such as a shed or barn. Skunks also spend a great deal of time digging grubs and earthworms in your lawn, causing a considerable amount of damage. We are all familiar with the offensive odor these creatures emit. Our company policy is to humanely trap and remove these animals from the site and consider possible exclusion work to decks and outbuildings, which would prevent problems further down the road.

All animals are unpredictable in their behavior patterns, and a skunk is no exception. Rabies is a real concern when handling these animals and the traps used to contain them. This is definitely an animal that needs to be handled by a professional only. Our company uses proven methods of exclusion work and removal of foul odors.

SquirrelsFlying Squirrel

Squirrel removal and exclusion in Connecticut is the most common problem faced by home owners. They include the gray squirrel, red squirrel, and flying squirrel. These are all cavity nesting animals taking advantage of an endless number of homes to spend the winter in. Once a squirrel gnaws its way into a structure they quickly develop a strong sense of site tendency, keeping them inside, despite your best efforts to discourage them. Once inside, they will do a great amount of damage to the insulation and softer wood trim. If the squirrels are allowed to go unabated, they will negate the insulating factor of the insulation, and possibly destroy electrical wiring in the attic areas.

In addition, they will often chew through the ceiling and end up within the home’s living area. Our policy is to humanely live trap these animals and relocate them to DEP designated state forests for release.

WoodchucksWoodchuck Removal

Woodchucks, groundhog, and whistle pigs are all the same animal, Marmota monax, all belonging to the rodent family, which also includes our common squirrels. The woodchucks color may vary from a grizzled brownish gray to black. This compact animal has a chunky body with relatively short legs and short tail. Just mention this animal to any gardener and you will evoke a response ranging from shear fear to uncontrollable anger to frustration. These quick scurrying creatures are capable of stripping a beautiful garden in a matter of a few hours. Chasing them away only encourages them to return quickly. Besides the early morning and late afternoon raids on lettuce and flower patches, woodchucks are mostly known for digging large burrows in various places on the homeowner’s property–mostly under low lying decks, front and back door steps, or any outbuildings or structures situated on concrete or wood slabs. Burrows are identified by large mounds of earth surrounding the animal’s opening of 10 to 12 inches in diameter.

The best time of the year to locate these den sites is in early spring, before the new foliage has a chance to conceal them once again. This is also the best time to trap and relocate them as when they emerge from hibernation, they are very hungry and food is at a premium. Woodchucks in our area breed in March and April and the average litter will be four young, so it’s best to remove them before you’re dealing with a small city of furry creatures.

WoodpeckersWoodpecker Damage

When you hear the rat-a-tat-tat sound early in the morning on the side of your house, it usually indicates you are going to have a problem. This is more than just an annoying sound that wakes you up early in the morning on the weekend; it is more likely a wake-up call that your home has been incorporated into the woodpecker telecommunications system. Nine times out of ten, woodpecker damage to the home is the result of drumming or audio marking of the woodpecker’s territory. This can be the result of competition for food to competition for a nesting area during the breeding season. Woodpeckers do not vocalize like other perching passerines (birds), but mark their territory by hammering on dead standing trees or your home that is possibly in their territory. Sometimes the actions of these birds can also indicate that you have a problem with carpenter bumblebees in the rake boards. Here in Connecticut, the Downey woodpecker and the Hairy woodpecker are the main culprits behind this damage. We have been working with woodpeckers for years and have several methods of controlling their damaging activities. We will be most happy to visit your home and evaluate the site as to the best solution for this situation. Please Note: No two woodpecker problems are the same.
